When you discover South African wines, you discover 360 years of history …
Tell me what style of wine you would like to taste from our wide variety of what I like to call ‘geographical pockets of terroir’. Whether you enjoy discovering cultivars that reflect a sense of South African place (terroir or identity), or whether you need to see how Burgundian, Bordeaux, Rhone, Alsace (or others, of course!) grow here… please add a little bit of information about your vinous preferences.
We also have our very own flagship red wine called Pinotage, as well as our Method Cap Classique (MCC), which is the name of our sparkling wine and made as in Champagne (methode champenoise). One of my favourite quotes on celebratory champagne is from Lily Bollinger herself. When asked about champagne she replied :
“I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I am alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it unless I’m thirsty.”
If tasting wine does not seem seductive, you can be equally seduced by the magnificent mountainous landscapes and enjoy chocolate, cheese, biltong and even ice cream tastings.
If that’s not enough to titillate your taste buds, you have a choice of stunning picnic venues and restaurants. These showcase the best of our culinary offerings – almost on a par with 3-Star Michelin establishments in France but at half the price. You will be amazed.
Art Galleries, Sculpture Gardens and even a replica of the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral await you. If you need to accommodate your children or grandchildren, we can arrange fun and informative experiences for them too.
Day excursions from Cape Town are ‘de rigour’ but I would suggest that you spend a few days in the Winelands to really relax and have the opportunity to get to know our wines and le douceur de vivre.
Franschhoek (le coin francais) is the gastronomical capital of the Cape and home to fine food.
The Constantia Valley which includes the most recent appellation of Cape Town in the Wine of Origin districts, has been since 1865, the ‘berceau ‘(birthplace) of our viticultural history. A day can be spent sipping and swallowing (or spitting) a variety of Constantia’s Dionysian delights – from the mythical ‘vin de constance ‘at Klein Constantia to the glorious array of predominantly white wines.
Lunching is a visual (and delectable) feast – charcuterie and cheese – framed by an amphitheatre of vineyards is but one of the many options in this picturesque area.
One of my favourite wine regions is the Hemel en Aarde Valley, Walker Bay, where one discovers rare expressions of Burgundian wine styles.
I usually combine these visits with whale watching in Hermanus, the whale capital of the world. The Swartland and Robertson, as well as many other appellations, are also worth visiting.
